The formula

Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × Density (tons/yd³)

Density is what turns volume into an order — suppliers sell by the ton. Typical values run from about 1.30 tons/yd³ for pea gravel up to 1.50 for decomposed granite. If your quarry quotes a density, use theirs; moisture and gradation shift the real number.

Compaction allowance

If the material will be compacted in place (a base course, DG pathway, or paver bed), add a compaction percentage so you order enough loose material to reach your target finished depth. Decorative loose cover doesn’t need it.

It depends on the material: pea gravel ≈1.30, sand ≈1.35, crushed stone ≈1.40, crushed concrete ≈1.45, decomposed granite ≈1.50 tons per cubic yard.
How deep should decorative gravel be?
2–3 inches is typical for decorative coverage over fabric; 3–4 inches for areas with light foot traffic so the ground doesn’t show through.
Should I order aggregate by the ton or by the yard?
Most suppliers sell by the ton. Calculate volume from your area and depth, then convert with the material density — which is exactly what this calculator does.
