Enter your trench and pipe dimensions to see bedding material needed.
Calculate bedding material for a pipe trench the correct way — net of the pipe itself. Enter trench length and width, pipe outside diameter, and bedding depths below and above the pipe to get tons of material.

The bedding zone runs from the bedding depth below the pipe, up through the pipe diameter, to the cover depth above it. The calculator subtracts the cylinder volume of the pipe — on larger diameters, skipping that subtraction over-orders by a significant margin.
Common practice is about 4 inches of bedding below the pipe and 6 inches above, using sand or 3/8-inch pea gravel that flows into the haunch zones under the pipe’s sides. Trench width is typically the pipe OD plus 12–18 inches of working room. Utility and municipal specs govern where they exist.
