Bank vs. swelled volume

Swelled Volume = Bank Volume × (1 + Swell %)

Soil in the ground (bank measure) is denser than the same soil after digging loosens it. Typical swell is 20–30% depending on soil type — sand swells less, clay more. Always plan trucking on the swelled number: the hole’s volume understates what you’ll haul.

Sizing truck loads

A standard tandem dump truck carries 10–14 cubic yards; smaller single-axle trucks carry 5–6. The calculator defaults to 10 yd³ (about 8 m³) per load — adjust it to match the trucks your hauler actually runs, and expect the last load to run light.

Why doesn’t excavated dirt fit back in the hole?
Digging breaks up the soil structure and adds air voids, expanding its volume by 20–30%. That swelled volume is what you haul and pay trucking on.
How many cubic yards fit in a dump truck?
Commonly 10–14 cubic yards for a tandem-axle dump truck and 5–6 for a single-axle. Weight limits can govern before volume with dense or wet material.
What swell factor should I use?
Sand and gravel: ~15–20%. Common earth/loam: ~25%. Clay: ~30% or more. When unsure, 25% is a reasonable default for mixed soil.
